In 2000, the City of Madison completed Frank Lloyd Wright’s vision for a community and convention facility that would provide a lake oriented gathering space, attract visitors to Madison and link the Wisconsin State Capitol Building with the shore of Lake Monona and the John Nolen bike path. SAA created a 68,000 sf rooftop garden to accommodate both private and public functions, reconstructed the lakefront bike path and created a land bridge (Olin Terrace and Martin Luther King Boulevard) to connect the new convention center with the Capitol Square. The roof garden is home to weekly music events, wedding receptions, art fairs and the best lake views in Madison. The restored lakefront bike path completes a vital link in Madison’s most popular bike path and provides lake access to pedestrians and fishermen. Olin Terrace and Martin Luther King Boulevard provide additional open space for community events including the annual Madison Art Fair, Taste of Madison, and the twice weekly farmer’s market.
