Goodrich Park Comments (transferred from WP) + Student Concepts

It's official.  SAA has combined the 'Community Comment' portal within its website!  In doing so we had to copy over the comments from the existing Wordpress site.  So while this is a log of sorts of previous comments, going forward please respond to the corresponding meeting and/or graphics contained therein.  Thank you, aw

Meeting #2 held this morning (Sept. 30, 2011). Reviewed site location in the context of utilities, parking, and access. Discussed system analysis alternatives and applied them to preliminary concept costs. Set agenda for upcoming school charrettes and discussed project time line.

As a Milton family with three young children I think this has a lot of promise to be a good addition to the city.

Nearly all young kids love playing in water, and so in that respect it has the potential to used by more people than other ideas (e.g., skateparks).

I do have two questions:

1) Do the plans include changing rooms or bathrooms? I assume so, but don’t see them.

2) How does the size compare to Middleton’s splash park? I’ve been there, and it is a nice size. If ours is going to be the same size or bigger we’d have a pretty nice facility for our own families with young children as well as to draw in visitors to our community.

On the other hand, if it were smaller than Middleton’s I would be concerned it wouldn’t get much use because it would seem uninspired and small, and eventually it would fall into disrepair.

Also keep in mind that this will only be open for a few months of the year, so doing it “right” so that it gets a lot of use is important.

SAA Design Group Comment:
In response your questions.
1. State law requires bathrooms. These should also be large enough for changing purposes.
2. The current goal is to be slightly larger than Middleton’s splash pad. Funding is a major factor in final sizing.
Thank you for your comments.

Steve M. Comment:
Thanks! That’s great to hear. I’m not able to make the meeting on Tuesday night but I hope the rest of the community is interested in this project as well. As the project progresses I would think that raising awareness in the community about the project and specific funding targets will help with the fundraising. It’s also going to be the end of the year which would help if donations are tax deductible.

You should make a dry area in the middle of the park with a bridge over a path to get there. Under the bridge should be a sprinkler raining water down

SAA is currently on a whirlwind tour of 5 local schools in the Milton School District. We are meeting with a broad cross section of students to get their (end user) input on what they want their park to look and feel like. See the community tonight at 6PM @ City Hall to update the public and share our findings. Going great!

Don’t know if it’s too late to consider this but for the name…other places (like Florida) they call them Spraygrounds…ya know, like Playground. I think that’s catchier than splash park.

SAA Design Group Comment:
Thank you for the comment. We were responding to the RFP uses the term Splash Park as the desired outcome. I think this is the term from the Goodrich Park Master Plan document. We can bring it up…but that’s where it came from…and yes, sprayground is a little more catchy.
